PIC Company History

From Humble Beginnings to Global Presence in Oil & Gas Inspection

Origins and Early Experience
PIC was founded after over forty years of hands-on experience in the oil and gas plant industry, encompassing direct fabrication welding, inspection, supervision, and management of equipment fabrication. The journey began in 1956, when I worked as a welder at Vulcan Tank, earning just $1.35 per hour. These formative years provided a solid foundation in both the technical and practical aspects essential to the sector.

Rise Through Inspection and Management
After accumulating significant expertise, I spent a decade performing third-party and staff inspections for both engineering and construction (E & C) firms, as well as other third-party inspection companies. Through these roles, I developed an extensive network and deep understanding of the needs of both clients and contract inspectors. This network and experience led me to establish PIC, with the vision of providing reliable, expert inspection services tailored to the oil and gas industry.

Expansion and Global Reach
PIC’s reputation for quality and dependability fueled its growth, attracting clients and inspectors not only across the United States but also in Canada, Mexico, China, Europe, and the United Arab Emirates. Over time, PIC expanded into additional regions, including South America, Australia, Africa, and Southeast Asia, continually striving to meet the needs of a global clientele. The company’s success was driven by a commitment to excellence and a collaborative approach with both clients and inspectors.

Leadership Transition and Continued Success
Upon my retirement in the late 1990s, I entrusted PIC to my oldest daughter and her husband, both of whom possessed extensive experience and knowledge in the industry. They successfully managed the company until his untimely death from a heart attack in the early 2000s. Fortunately, my son-in-law had prepared for such circumstances by designating my oldest grandson, Kevin Phillips.

At the time, Kevin was the lead inspector in the Tulsa area, having worked as both a welder and inspector since graduating high school in the mid-1990s. His practical experience and dedication made him a natural fit for leadership. Since assuming his role, Kevin has served as both Manager and Chief Inspector, driving the company’s continued expansion. He has added new clientele and inspectors, further strengthening PIC’s position in the industry.

Ongoing Involvement and Legacy
Although retired, I have remained involved with PIC as a consultant, providing guidance and occasionally performing inspections when needed. My ongoing connection to the company ensures that the founding values—integrity, expertise, and client focus—continue to shape PIC’s future.

PIC’s growth and longevity are a testament to the value of experience, strong leadership, and commitment to excellence. From a modest start as a welder in 1956 to a company with a global footprint, the journey has been marked by resilience, innovation, and the dedication of multiple generations. As PIC continues to evolve, its legacy endures through the people who drive its success and the clients it serves worldwide.
